Job Description
Job Title:
Engineer Mine II
Job Summary
We are seeking a Mid-Range Planning Engineer to join our team. Reporting to the Engineering Superintendent, the Mid-Range Planning Engineer will lead the development, optimization, and maintenance of medium-term open-pit mine plans, which are aligned with annual budgets, short-term execution plans, and long-term strategy.
This position follows a 14-on/14-off rotational schedule at the mine site in Geraldton, ON.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development, optimization, and maintenance of medium-term open-pit mine plans (approx. 3–18-month horizon), aligned with annual budgets, short-term execution plans, and long-term strategy.
- Create and manage pit phase sequencing, pushbacks, waste dumps, haul roads, ramp systems, and bench layouts—ensuring designs are safe, practical, and efficient.
- Use Deswik (Design, Scheduler, Integrated Scheduling [IS], Mine Design Management [MDM], etc.) as the primary tool for mine design, scheduling, scenario analysis, and optimization.
- Perform trade-off analyses (e.g., slope constraints, fleet utilization, ore deliverability, stripping ratios) to maximize value and meet ore delivery targets.
- Reconcile plan to actual, conduct variance analysis, and propose corrective actions to operations and technical stakeholders.
- Maintain a robust set of planning assumptions (productivities, equipment availabilities, geotechnical constraints, metallurgical inputs) and ensure version control and traceability in planning models.
- Provide inputs to budget cycles, resourcing forecasts, and life-of-mine updates, bridging medium- and long-term plan layers.
- Mentor junior mine planning engineers, review their work, and facilitate integration with geology, surveying, processing, and operations teams.
- Ensure that all designs and plans comply with safety, regulatory, environmental, and geotechnical guidelines in the open-pit context.
Required Experience and Skill Set
- 7+ years of mine planning experience, including medium-range planning.
- Demonstrated track record of leading mid-term plan development and closing the loop to short-term performance.
- Proficiency in Deswik suite (Deswik.CAD, Deswik.Scheduler, Deswik.IS, MDM, etc.).
- Deep understanding of open-pit mining methods, sequencing, haulage optimization, stripping, and waste design.
- Strong analytical capability in scenario modeling, sensitivity analysis, constraint handling, and KPI reporting.
- Able to communicate and influence effectively across Operations, Geology, Survey, and senior leadership, with clear presentation of planning results.
- Demonstrates strong data discipline through version control, documentation, and auditing of planning assumptions and models.
- Able to mentor and review the work of junior planning staff.
- Applies a strong safety mindset by embedding risk and stability considerations into all designs.
- Possesses advanced knowledge of engineering principles and techniques.
- Demonstrates effective supervisory skills.
Job Conditions
- Strong analytical skills.
- Able to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to create a positive work environment.
- Willing to adapt and work in an inclusive work environment.
Certifications
- Valid driver's license.
- Professional Engineering Designation, or eligible to obtain.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering or related discipline.
